Artist's Statement
"I am a Manchester [UK] born artist who graduated from Loughborough University in 2000 with a BA [Honours Degree] in 'Fine Art Painting'. Since completing my degree I have continued to work, exhibiting throughout the North West and in September 2004 I returned to Loughborough University to study for an MA in 'Art and Design Studio Practice'.
Over the last few years my work has mainly been concerned with the processes and techniques within both contemporary and traditional painting, in an attempt, through an implied narrative, to create a bond between the two.
My work embraces both my love of the cinematic image and my interest in the use of technology within painting over the centuries in an attempt to create pieces that are innovative and unique. The 'Dualism', that I employ fractures between 'Abstraction' and 'Realism' conforms to the notion of 'Hybrid painting' and I feel epitomises the attitude of the exciting contemporary scene.
Taking inspiration from a number of different artists, sources and genres ['Science Fiction' and 'Horror' cinema/literature, religious iconography, 'Romanticism', 'Abstract Expressionism' and the landscape to name but a few], pictures from magazines and books, personal photographs and classic paintings are collected and then through computer manipulation, I deconstruct and rework the imagery, to produce compositions with a far more infinite potential. These are then reproduced in a painted format, and using a number of different surfaces and mediums [such as glass, resin and Aluminium] with the vehicle [ie: the pigment] then blurred and twisted to create an essence of the 'Uncanny ' so prevalent in the horror films of the early twentieth century [particularly 'Nosferatu' and 'Dr.Caligaris Cabinet'] yet at the same time embracing the notion of 'Hybridity'. The results are images that resonate a cinematic effervescence, with depth of field and movement, yet at the same time remain ambiguous and disturbing."
